Governor Laura Kelly issues disaster proclamation for severe storms and flooding
Due to severe weather with the potential for flooding due to heavy rain Governor Laura Kelly issued a verbal state of disaster emergency proclamation Wednesday afternoon. This declaration allows resources to be used to provide state assistance.
“Our priority is protecting lives, supporting first responders, and helping affected communities,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “I urge residents to stay safe, avoid flooded areas, and follow guidance from local officials.”
The Kansas Division of Emergency Management has activated the State Emergency Operations Center to a partial activation with 24-hour operations. The SEOC is staffed by KDEM and their Emergency Support Function partners Kansas State Fire Marshal, Kansas National Guard, Kansas Department of Transportation, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and National Weather Service. The SEOC will coordinate state efforts and support local counties and local responders if requested. Swift-water search and rescue task forces have been prepositioned across the state to support local jurisdictions if needed.
Tropical moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Polo and an early fall storm system will mix over Kansas throughout Thursday. This unstable mix will result in widespread rainfall totals of one to three inches with isolated totals exceeding six inches. Across northern Kansas this rain will fall on saturated soil, leading to potential flash flooding and river flooding. Multiple rivers may reach minor or moderate flood stages, and smaller streams may overflow their banks. Rainfall and thunderstorm activity will end in Kansas Friday morning, but river flooding may linger into the weekend.
