Japan Calls on Iran to Show Flexibility Amid US Commitment Dispute
According to reports, Takaichi made the remarks during a phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday, marking their third exchange since the conflict erupted in late February.
During the call, she also pressed Tehran to accelerate efforts toward reaching a settlement aimed at ending hostilities in the Middle East as quickly as possible.
The discussion took place against the backdrop of ongoing mediation efforts led by Pakistan, which is working to facilitate a temporary understanding between the US and Iran while also laying the groundwork for a broader peace framework.
Pezeshkian, for his part, described diplomacy as the “most effective means of resolving disputes,” but argued that such efforts have been undermined by what he called “breaches of commitments" by the US.
He also raised concerns about repeated violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon, the continued displacement of civilians there, and what he described as US political and military backing for Israel, according to a statement from the Iranian presidency.
According to reports, the Iranian president urged the international community to take a more active role in addressing the crisis and helping bring an end to ongoing regional hostilities.
