Trump put sanctions on India to push end of Ukraine’s war

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has levied “sanctions” on India earlier this month as part of his initiatives to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, a White House spokeswoman confirmed on Tuesday.

Karoline Leavitt explained that the measures involve a new 25% punitive tariff set to take effect on August 27, targeting India for its continued purchases of Russian oil.

“Look, the president has put tremendous public pressure to bring this war to a close,” she said. “He’s taken actions, as you’ve seen, sanctions on India and other actions as well. He has made himself very clear that he wants to see this war end.”

This latest 25% levy is in addition to an earlier 25% duty imposed after attempts to finalize a trade deal between Washington and New Delhi failed. India has condemned the tariffs as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable” and has vowed to safeguard its national interests.

Leavitt’s remarks followed comments from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who accused India of “profiteering” by purchasing Russian crude and reselling it. When asked why similar tariffs were not applied to China for its Russian oil imports, Bessent explained that Beijing’s purchases remain “sub-optimal.”

He elaborated, “If you go back and look to 2022, pre-invasion, 13% of China’s oil was already coming from Russia, now it’s 16, so China has a diversified input of their oil. If you go back and look now, I believe India had less than 1% of their oil (from Russia) and now I believe it’s up to 42%,” according to reports.
