India Urges Unified BRICS Action Amid Global Instability
(MENAFN) Foreign ministers from the BRICS nations began meetings on Thursday, with India emphasizing the need for closer coordination in responding to growing geopolitical and economic instability linked to conflicts in the Middle East.
According to reports, discussions are expected to focus heavily on the ongoing US-Israeli conflict involving Iran as well as disruptions tied to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Ahead of the closed-door session, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said the current international climate is marked by major uncertainty.
“We meet at a time of considerable flux in international relations. Ongoing conflicts, economic uncertainties, and challenges in trade, technology, and climate are shaping the global landscape. There is a growing expectation, particularly from emerging markets and developing countries, that BRICS will play a constructive and stabilizing role,” Jaishankar said ahead of a closed-door meeting.
Addressing fellow ministers, Jaishankar highlighted the Middle East conflict as an issue requiring urgent attention.
“Continuing tensions, risks to maritime traffic, and disruptions to energy infrastructure highlight the fragility of the situation,” he said.
He also voiced concern about broader regional instability, referring to the “humanitarian implications” of the war in Gaza and the “continuing challenges” confronting Lebanon and Syria.
Jaishankar further argued that BRICS countries should confront “the increasing resort to unilateral coercive measures and sanctions,” saying they “disproportionately affect developing countries.”
“These unjustifiable measures cannot substitute dialogue, nor can pressure replace diplomacy,” he said.
The foreign ministers’ gathering precedes the 18th BRICS summit, which India is scheduled to host in September. The bloc — made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — promotes a more balanced global order and stronger representation for developing nations on economic, political, and security matters.
